HistoryAfter the international intervention in the Serb-Kosovar war in 1999 the province of Kosovo has been governed by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) under the authority of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 and had self-government.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February 2008. Formerly it was an autonomous state within Serbia under NATO protection.
It's independence is not recognized by Serbia, Russia and some other countries.
