| History | Tanganyika originally consisted of the Tanganyika Territory,
the British share of German East Africa. After World War II, it became a United Nations
Trust Territory. The other parts of German East Africa were taken into Belgian trusteeship
and became present-day Rwanda and Burundi.
In 1961, The Trust Territory became the independent sovereign state of Tanganyika. In 1964, Zanzibar and Tanganyika unified as Tanzania. Pemba Island is also part of Tanzania. |
