Plate History

1918 - 1960
(A) In 1980, President Augusto Pinochet's government ordered the standardization
of color-coded identification for better visibility, but as the nomenclature was
about to expire on December 31, 1984, it gave way to the black on white license plate
issued by the Civil Registry and Identification Office.
The plates pictured here, were officially issued and circulated as a pilot program to facilitate public visibility. Colors were randomly assigned by commune, city, or town. (2).
After 1984, they received standard plates without the provincial name.
